Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about our tax calculator
Why can it pay off for me to use KommuneSkat?
There are significant differences in municipal taxes in Denmark. For example, an average family with a total annual income of 1 million DKK, two children, and a property valued at 3 million DKK can save up to 61,500 DKK per year by living in the cheapest municipality.
Where do you get your data from to make the personal tax and cost calculations?
We use data from sources such as Nogletal.dk, which is owned by the Ministry of the Interior and Health.
What years are your calculations based on?
We update our data at least once a year when municipal taxes change – therefore, our calculations are up-to-date and follow the municipalities' own rates.
How accurate is your tax calculator?
Since we only use data from official government sources (e.g., the Ministry of the Interior and Health and SKAT.dk), our calculator is very accurate.
Have you taken into account the new tax rules that come into effect in 2026?
Yes, our calculator takes into account the new tax rules.
Do you take all taxes into account in the tax calculator?
Yes. All municipal taxes are included. You will therefore be able to see which municipality is the cheapest for you and your family to live in. Please note, however, that only municipal tax rates are compared. If you want an overview of the total amount you must pay to SKAT (Danish Tax Authority), you must also include state taxes such as bottom bracket tax (bundskat), middle bracket tax (mellemskat), and top bracket tax (topskat). However, these taxes do not vary from municipality to municipality and therefore do not affect our comparison/calculation. You can read more about state taxes on SKAT's website: skat.dk
Is KommuneSkat free to use?
Yes. The whole calculator and all 98 municipalities are freely available. You do not need an account, and there is no subscription. The site is funded by advertising, which is clearly labelled and kept separate from the calculator's figures.
Do I have to pay church tax?
Only if you are a member of the Danish National Church. You are a member by default if you were baptised into it, and you can leave by contacting your local parish office. The calculator always includes church tax in the total tax burden, so if you are not a member, subtract the amount yourself. It appears as its own line in the calculation details.
What is land tax, and which figure should I enter?
Land tax is levied on the land value — the value of the ground itself, not the house standing on it. The rate is quoted in per mille and runs from 3.1‰ in Frederiksberg to 17.7‰ in Varde. Enter the land value, not the property value and not the purchase price. The three figures are rarely the same. You will find the land value in your property assessment at vurderingsportalen.dk.
