About KommuneSkat
Who runs the site, where the numbers come from, and how we make money.
Who is behind it
KommuneSkat is run by twoB, a Danish company registered under CVR number 34379327 at Augustvej 18, 2860 Søborg. The site is built and maintained in Denmark, and it is written for Danish residents deciding where to live.
Why the site exists
Municipal tax is one of the largest single items in a Danish household budget, and it varies by almost three percentage points between the cheapest and the most expensive municipality. Yet it is hard to compare. The figures are scattered across 98 municipal budgets and fee tables, and they are rarely presented in a form you can add up. We built the tool we wanted ourselves when we tried to work out what moving would actually cost. The calculator gathers municipal tax, church tax, land tax and childcare fees in one place and converts them into the number that matters: what it costs you per year.
Where the numbers come from
The municipal rates — income tax, church tax, land tax and childcare fees — come from Nøgletal.dk, run by the Danish Ministry of the Interior and Health. The personal allowance, employment allowance and labour market contribution are set in national law and follow the rates in force for the 2026 income year. We do not invent figures and we do not interpolate. A few municipalities have not published a fee for every type of care; those items are left out of the calculation rather than guessed.
How we calculate
The calculator follows the same order the Danish tax authority does: the labour market contribution is deducted from gross income first, then the employment allowance and the personal allowance, and municipal and church tax are charged on what remains. Land tax is a per-mille rate on the land value. Childcare costs are the municipality's monthly fee multiplied by twelve. The calculator deliberately omits bottom-, middle-, top- and top-top-bracket tax and property value tax, because these are state taxes and identical nationwide. They would add the same amount to every municipality and make the difference harder to see. The full method, with a worked example, is set out in the guide beneath the calculator.
Independence and funding
We do not sell tax advice, we do not broker property, and we take no payment from municipalities, estate agents or banks to feature them. The site is free to use and funded by advertising. Ads are clearly labelled as ads and kept separate from the calculator's figures and from the editorial content. Advertisers have no influence over which municipalities are shown, the order they appear in, or what our guides say.
What the site is not
KommuneSkat is a comparison tool, not tax advice. The figures are derived from publicly available rates and the information you enter yourself, and they do not cover individual deductions, pension arrangements or special tax schemes. If you are making a significant financial decision, use the calculator to narrow the field — then speak to the tax authority or an accountant about your specific situation.
